Jan. to Jun. 2018

1st Jan New Year's Day - Club closed
8th Jan Singaround
15th Jan Tom Lewis - A first visit for a top performer from the world of maritime music. Tom puts across traditional shanties and songs fashioned from his own seafaring background in powerful vocal style. Add ukelele and button accordion together with infectious good humour and you have a recipe for a great night.
22nd Jan Singaround
29th Jan Jim Causley - Another first visit, this time from one of the younger generation. Jim is steeped in the traditions of Devon. He honed his musical skills as one of the early graduates of the Newcastle Folk Degree and in groups like Devil's Interval, becoming recognised as one of the finest male folk singers (so far) of the 21st century. Indeed, he has been nominated 6 times for BBC Radio 2 folk awards over the years. More recently he has established a strong reputation as a song writer in the folk idiom, including settings of poems distant relative Charles Causley.
5th Feb Singaround
12th Feb Tom McConville - His live performances combine a rollercoaster of musical delights from fast, rhythmic dance tunes , through beautiful slow airs and of course, great singing - all presented with his inimitable sense of humour and style. Tom will give us a great night of quality music.
19th Feb Singaround
26th Feb Lynne Heraud & Pat Turner always give us a hugely entertaining evening with their combination of humour and song -- "everything from high tragedy to ingenious smut in glorious vocal harmony!" They also, between them, play guitar, recorder, English concertina and a variety of whistles (including Swanee, policeman's and referee's) and are not in the least averse to dressing up or dancing when a song requires it.
5th Mar Singaround
12th Mar Pete Shepheard & Arthur Watson have a wealth of songs gleaned directly from traditional singers they have known. Originally from Gloucestershire, Pete has lived for many years in Fife: he is a noted song-collector and plays melodeon. Arthur is originally from Aberdeen and now lives in Perth: he plays whistles large and small. Their shared enthusiasm for their songs illuminates their performances.
